“ Pacific Sunrise 3 night sail ”
Jul 26, 2009, 4:21 PM
Just returned from Queensland - thanks to all who recommended Pacific Sunrise. It was even better than expected. 17 guests (limit is 21) on a 33 meter, magnificently restored timber sailboat with an absolutely fantastic crew of 5. This is the boat for those who want the experience of sailing but also want a bit more comfort and service. The staff greets you at Shute Harbor, carries your luggage on board for you and stows it in your cabins. Meals are prepared by an amazing chef who could work in any 5 star restaurant anywhere (even breakfast was presented beautifully). They have a full bar on board and crew members are experienced at mixing cocktails or helping you select a wine. This is the only service that is not included in the fare, but the drinks were very reasonably priced and there was a wide selection. The decks and interiors of the boat are all polished, gleaming wood and are quite beautiful. The cabins are all roomy with en suite baths, altho the larger the cabin, the larger the bath. We were lucky to get the Blue Pearl Suite on the top deck of the boat, with it's wrap around windows and sitting deck just outside the cabin. The Whitehaven Suite is also very large, it's on the middle deck just off the dining/bar area. The mid-level cabins - very roomy - are below deck and are accessed by a staircase from the dining area, while the smaller cabins below deck are accessed from a narrower deck staircase. There was plenty of room for everyone with space to spread out. The dining area was much larger than the pictures make it look and was very comfortable. There are 2 sitting areas on the mid and top deck, and this is where afternoon snacks (cheeses, crackers, relishes) are served at 5pm. There's also 3pm tea and biscuits in the dining area each day. A dive master and dive instructor are part of the crew - diving and snorkeling is done either in the fringe reefs around the islands or the outer reef, weather permitting. The boat also has kayaks which we really enjoyed. The stop at Whitehaven Beach was unbelievable, postcards do not do this beach justice. I have to say again how wonderful the crew is. Their service and attention to personal details was above and beyond the call of duty. We very much regretted not choosing the six day sail, and will make every effort to return and go out on this boat again. Can't recommend it highly enough.
